COMPOSITION AND ARRANGING LESSONS

ANATOMY OF AN ARRANGEMENT

A breakdown of different elements of arranging for small group or big band.

ARRANGING "SOPHISTICATED LADY" FOR 5 HORNS

This week's videos are all based on a recent arrangement I wrote of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady". To start, be sure you watch the YouTube video here so you can see the end result!

MAJOR TRIADS ON THE DIMINISHED SPECTRUM

This is a concept I use very often while arranging and improvising. You can use major triads within a diminished spectrum to imply various alterations AND keep the sounds organized.

SOPHISTICATED LADY

This is a detailed analysis of one of my favorite songs, Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady". I break down the chord function, 2 note voice leading, and consonance and dissonance used in the melody.

Justification Exercises

This will grow overtime. A series of exercises dealing with a reharm concept that I use often when composing and arranging.
